Early Success
The Altoona Curve are currently 18-10 and in second place, ½ game behind the Akron Aeros (Indians), in the Eastern League South. The Curve lead the E.L. with 24 homeruns and are 2nd in team batting average (.272). The longball has spelled success this year. Altoona is 12-2 in games when hitting a homerun.
Player of the Month
Adam Boeve has been named the E.L. Player of the Month for April after he batted .380 with 3 homeruns and 16 RBI for the month. He ranks at or near the top of many E.L. categories. He leads the league in hits with 35, in second in batting (.354), runs (20), and is tied for fourth in RBI with 18.
Boeve attended the University of Northern Iowa on a football scholarship and played safety and special teams on the nationally ranked team in 1999 before focusing entirely on baseball.
He was a member of league championship teams in each of his first two professional seasons (Williamsport, 2003 and Hickory, 2004).
Eastern League Experience
First baseman, Simon Pond is in the midst of his 13th professional season. The Curve is the fifth Eastern League team for Pond. He played for Harrisburg (1998), Akron (2001), New Haven (2003), and Bowie (2005). Pond has played 16 games at the major league system for Toronto in 2004. He was signed by the Pirates as a minor league free agent in December.
This season, Pond is batting .242 with 6 HR (tied for second) and 22 RBI (leads the E.L.). He has a .257 average and all 6 homeruns of righties this year.
Down Under
Australian, Brett Roneberg has been added to the Curve roster from extended spring training. This year is Roneberg’s 10 professional season and he missed the entire 2005 season recovering from surgery to repair an injured rotator cuff in his left shoulder. The injury was sustained while playing in the Venezuelan Winter League in 2004. This season he has hit safely in his first eleven games going 19-for-48.
Roneberg is no stranger to big game situations. He has played in two Olympic Games and the inaugural World Baseball Classic this March. He earned a silver medal for Australia in the 2004 Athens games.
Leader on the Mound
LHP Josh Shortsleff is tied with teammate Landon Jacobsen for the lead in the E.L. in wins with four and ranks 10th in ERA (1.86). The Curve bats should get an assist with those four wins. Shortsleff has benefited from 44 runs in his five starts and the Curve have not lost a game that he has started this year.
