Welcome to the first edition of the 2006
Baseball Almanac 9-Inning newsletter.
1st Inning: Game logs are one of newest most exciting features. Here is how
they work. Say for example you are on the Kirby Puckett page (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/player.php?p=puckeki01).
In the Hitting Stats section you will notice that there are now boxes around
the Yr (Year), Team & G (Games Played) column. The Year now links to the
Year in Review page from the league in which the player played. The Team now
links to the roster for the year in question. And the new addition is the
Games Played link which brings up a list of all the games the player
appeared in during that particular season along with some basic
data about how they hit in those particular games.
2nd Inning: Our Baseball Digital Scorebook was easily the single most
downloaded application on Baseball Almanac in 2005. We are pleased to
announce that the 2006 edition is even more powerful, has even more
features, and remains the single best scoring application on the Internet.
Don't believe us? Try out the demo
(http://baseball-almanac.com/bstatmen.shtml).
3rd Inning: Every single one of our player pages now has a small chart
picture next to the Born In field. Click it and up comes a detailed analysis
(http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/birthplace.php)
of where every major league player has been born. This data is updated the
moment new biographical data is reported by SABR so it is truly as up to
date as possible. As always we like taking these type scripts to the next
level, so at the bottom of that same page is a list of years spanning 1876
through 2005. Click a season there and you will get a breakdown of every
player in that particular season making it easy to determine what percentage
of players were from foreign countries, California, or any other place
during that particular season.
4th Inning: We could not complete the third inning and just skip the
opposite set of research so every single one of our player pages now has a
small chart picture next to the Died In field. Click it and up comes a
detailed analysis (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/players/deathplace.php)
of where every major league player passed away. This data is updated the day
a player passes away so it is truly as up to date as possible. As always we
like taking these type scripts to the next level, so at the bottom of that
same page is a list of years spanning 1876 through 2005. Click a season
there and you will get a breakdown of death locations for every player
who died in that particular season.
5th Inning: If you have not visited Baseball Almanac in a while you'll
probably be pleased to know we added two new biographical fields to our
player pages. The first is cemetery data. A breakdown of the 16,219 players
is: 1,036 unknown cemetery locations, 3 pending (passed away in the last
week), 7,943 which are not applicable (player is still alive) and 7,237
known locations which are all online today.
6th Inning: The second new biographical field is a bit "out there", but we
enjoyed adding it nonetheless. Based on a player's date of birth, we have
included the Zodiac sign for each player. This data is updated the moment
SABR releases newly discovered birth data so it too is as accurate as
possible.
7th Inning: Another recent addition to the site is our Baseball Card
Database
(http://www.baseball-almanac.com/baseball_cards/baseball_cards.php).
This new project has yet another insane goal similar to when we wanted to
track down and add every uniform number in history (successfully completed
long ago). Anyway, our goal here is to not just add baseball card lists, but
rather to make lists that allow you to click and get a player's stats from
within the checklist. This new endeavor has 23 sets integrated and 18,096
cards linked to date. Our goal in 2006 is break the 100,000 cards mark at
which point we will add a new feature on each
player page which will bring up a checklist of cards from sets with that
player on them.
8th Inning: Speaking of insane projects, our current project of adding
integrated baseball cards onto the player pages which serve as a great
player picture (in our opinion) is still advancing nicely. We have more than
3,000 integrated pictures (last names A through Q) with thousands more on
the way throughout 2006. A slow tedious project, but one we are truly
enjoying and hope you are too.
9th Inning: Another nice new upgrade that we added earlier this year is on
the team rosters. Besides the regular / easily found data, we have included
in the Fast Facts an Opening Day roster, a most starts by each position
roster, a known salary roster, and a uniform number roster (sorted by number
rather than by position in the common roster).
We hope you enjoy these upgrades and new features even more. If you wish to
financially support our efforts in 2006 we could truly use your support. For
six
years we have yet to take a salary or spend a penny on anything other than
the Baseball Almanac family of sites so if you can / wish to help (even a
small donation is better than none at all) please visit this page (http://www.baseball-almanac.com/support.shtml).
